Haverstraw Quarry, Rockland County NY
The fracturing of the light and shadow on the quarry’s rock faces and “benches” (the stepped setbacks the quarrymen must maintain to prevent the collapse of rock walls as the excavation deepens) are especially dramatic in the early morning and late afternoon light. This is an especially dynamic site; as I paint, I listen for the sound of the siren, the signal that an explosive blast is imminent and that I must run to safety.
